Fantasy Rugby 2019: Rules, tips and how to play ESPN's Six Nations game

Now you have signed up for ESPN Fantasy Rugby 2019, you may be wondering what to do next -- and how you can give yourself the best chance of winning a weekly prize or, perhaps, the big one at the end of the tournament.

The basics are straightforward. For each week of the tournament, you -- the manager (or coach, director of rugby, boss, big cheese ... whatever you prefer) -- have to pick 15 players for your Fantasy Six Nations team from our database of close to 200 Test stars from the Six Nations' countries -- in World Rugby ranked order: Ireland, Wales, England, Scotland, France, and Italy.

But there are some basic rules to follow:

The first rule of ESPN Fantasy Rugby 2019: You can have only four players from one nation in your team.

The second rule of ESPN Fantasy Rugby 2019: Your team must include three front-row forwards, two second-row forwards, three back-row forwards, one scrum-half, one fly-half, two centres and three outside backs.

Don't forget to specify a designated goal-kicker. He's important. Choose wisely, and you will get a load of points from penalties and conversions.

Just like the real game, be sure you have a balance of players. Players score points in multiple ways, from both an attacking and a defensive perspective.

You can filter the player list by country and position, or if you know exactly who you're after use the search function. Just remember the first and second rules of ESPN Fantasy Rugby 2019.

If you're unhappy with a selection, use the + / - buttons next to each player's name to add or remove players from your team. You can tinker with your team as much as you like until the first match kicks off on Friday Feb. 1.

When picking your team, think about how these players are going to get you fantasy points. For example, any forward who scores a try will pick up eight points -- the highest possible score for an individual action.

You get two points for every player on your fantasy rugby teamsheet who starts a match and a point every time one of your players makes a multiple of five tackles in a game [five tackles = one point, 10 = two, and so on].

Watch out though, for those brilliant-yet-volatile players who just might find themselves at the wrong end of one stern warning too many from the referee. Yellow or, worse, red cards will lose points for your team.

If you're not too sure about who to pick, do take a look at previous Six Nations tournaments on ESPN to see who performed well and who maybe didn't.

As in any sport, players get injured or don't perform as you well as you may have hoped. The good news is your team is not set in stone for the whole of the tournament once France-Wales kicks off at Stade de France at 8p.m. GMT on Feb. 1.

Although your fantasy side is then locked for that rugby weekend, you can make three free player transfers between each round of matches. And if you can't keep up to date with the latest team news, we can send you an alert if one of your players isn't featuring at the weekend to give you every chance to make a change.

Ready to go? Thought so. If you haven't signed up for ESPN Fantasy Rugby 2019 yet, do it now.
