Jonathan Calleri to replace Luciano Vietto on Argentina Olympics squad

Atletico Madrid have not authorised Luciano Vietto to participate for Argentina in next month's Olympics in Rio, according to Club Atlético Barracas Central president Claudio Tapia.

Vietto will be replaced by Sao Paulo forward Jonathan Calleri, Argentina coach Julio Olarticoechea confirmed.

"I spoke with [Calleri] and he told me he was dying to play for the national team," the Under-23 coach said. "Now we just have to wait for the procedures so he can replace Vietto."

Tapia said that Atletico "changed their minds" on Vietto, who practiced on Thursday under Diego Simeone in Madrid.

"First they said yes and then they said no," Tapia told Ole.

Olarticoechea said he would not argue the point with the club.

"They are obligated to authorise him, but this is where we are right now. We have alternatives -- Plans B and C," he said. "We won't be making excuses. We are going to go into this with our heads held high and we are going to give our all in each training, day and match. Hopefully, we can win something."

Independiente have also said that they will not give the green light to Victor Cuesta.

"We have already decided that Cuesta is our only central defender and there is no one to replace him," Independiente general secretary Hector Maldonado told 'El Rojo en la Uno.' "We could give them one of our other players as a replacement without any problem."
