Title decider as Ghana Premier League resumes

There is a massive league decider on Wednesday as the Ghana Premier League resumes after a one-month break for the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Championships.

That one-month break provided a major boost for the domestic game as home-based players beat Nigeria to win the tournament and provide new evidence that the league is not as bad as performances of clubs in pan-African club competitions suggest.

Now they have the perfect setting to build on the interest generated during that period, and some of the games lined up on the resumption are a perfect fit for that.

Leaders Aduana Stars are at home to second-placed WAFA with a one-point advantage. It is the first of four games Aduana must win to become champions for only the second time in their history. If they win those four games, nothing their closest challengers --including WAFA and Hearts of Oak -- do will matter in the end. T

he permutations are the same for WAFA. If they win the remaining four games of the season, including the one against Aduana tonight, then they will become league champions for the first time in their history.

Accra Hearts of Oak, four points behind Stars and three behind WAFA, will be hoping both sides stumble in their remaining games if the Phobians are to sneak in as champions. Hearts face some very difficult games themselves, including a trip to Wa on Wednesday to face defending champions All Stars.

While the title race is effectively between three sides, the relegation battle draws in five teams with two slots to fill.

Bolga All Stars are already relegated, but two of Great Olympics, Liberty, Inter Allies, Tema Youth and AshantiGold are up for relegation.

AshantiGold have the most difficult game of the relegation threatened sides -- an away tie against Asante Kotoko in Kumasi on Thursday. The Miners could stay up with at least four points from their last four games.

Inter Allies need six points from their games and will hope to pick up the first of those three away in Cape Coast against Dwarfs. Great Olympics can begin their own great escape against relegated Bolga All Stars, while Tema Youth are at home to Elmina Sharks in Tema.
