CAF Super Cup: Wydad Casablanca beat Tout Puissant Mazembe

Amin Tighazoui scored the only goal of the game as Wydad Casablanca beat Tout Puissant Mazembe 1-0 at the Stade Mohammed V on Saturday.

Tighazoui beat Sylvain Gbohouo with a delightful free kick in the 83rd minute as the CAF Champions League holders downed the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup winners following a cagey contest.

Walid El Karti had earlier had a 55th-minute penalty saved by Gbohouo, before Tighazoui struck a late winner to down a Mazembe side who had appeared content to contain the Moroccan giants.

Chisom Chikatara and Ismail El Hadad had had chances to open the scoring for the hosts, while Rainford Kalaba also missed a fine opportunity to give Mazembe an unlikely lead in the 35th minute.

The match was the first in Africa to use VAR technology.

Wydad's victory means that the Champions League holders have now won 19 of the last 20 Super Cups, and extended a fine recent run for Moroccan football.

As well as providing the Champions League winners last year, the North African giants also won the African Nations Championship earlier this month with a home-based squad

The senior side followed up their quarter-final appearance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations by sealing a spot at the World Cup.

Wydad's victory - their first Super Cup triumph - sees them pocket $100,000, while defeated finalists Mazembe, who had previously won the Super Cup on three occasions, return to Central Africa with $75,000.
