Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov signs two-year contract extension

Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov has signed a two-year contract extension after guiding the host nation to the World Cup quarterfinals.

Cherchesov's team, the lowest ranked in the tournament, had not been backed to make much impact but ended up only going out on penalties to Croatia and beat Spain in the round of 16.

Former goalkeeper Cherchesov was thanked by the Russian Football Federation for securing the country's best World Cup finish of the post-Soviet era.

"Stanislav Cherchesov and his team have the complete trust of the Federation," Aleksandr Alaev, the acting head, said.

"We anticipate bright victories and significant achievements ahead for the Russian team."

Russian president Vladimir Putin will thank Cherchesov and his players at an awards ceremony at the Kremlin this weekend.

Russia travel to Turkey in the UEFA Nations League on Sept. 7, and then host Sweden the following month.
