Sao Paulo fan falls to his death during match against Corinthians

SAO PAULO -- A Brazilian football fan has died after falling 25 meters from the top of Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo onto a parking lot.

The height is equivalent to an eight-story building.

Bruno Pereira da Silva, aged 23, suffered head injuries and died upon arrival at a local hospital on Sunday.

He and other fans were attempting to jump to a section of the stadium where they could get a better view of the Sao Paulo state championship match between Sao Paulo and archrival Corinthians. The game ended 1-1.

Sao Paulo issued a statement on Sunday, saying: "Sao Paulo Football Club is profoundly saddened by the accident involving a fan before the game against Corinthians this Sunday, at Morumbi.

"The club provided immediate attention soon after the fall of the fan, who was trying to access another section of the stadium by jumping over one of the dividers separating stands.

"The injured fan was attended to by the medical staff hired by the club and immediately taken by ambulance to the Municipal Hospital of Camp Limpo."

Corinthians sent well-wishes to the fan's family on their Twitter account, saying: "Strength to the family of the Sao Paulo fan who was injured and lost his life at Morumbi today."

Friends of da Silva told Brazilian media Silva was attending his first football match.
