Shakhtar Donetsk appoint Paulo Fonseca as new coach

Shakhtar Donetsk have appointed Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach in succession to Mircea Lucescu.

Portuguese coach Fonseca, who was born in Mozambique, has also coached Aves, Pacos Ferreira, Porto and Braga and joins Shakhtar on a two-year contract.

He won the Portuguese Super Cup in 2013 with Porto and the Portuguese Cup in 2016 when in charge of Braga.

Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov told the club website: "This is a young, ambitious and highly qualified specialist, who, I am sure, will do everything to make the fans proud of their team. Paulo needs Shakhtar and Shakhtar needs Paulo."

Fonseca added: "I am very happy to become a part of this club Shakhtar. Working for this club is a huge privilege for any coach.

"I want to tell the fans that we will continue all the work that was carried out for many years at Shakhtar.

"We are very ambitious, and we will turn all our ambitions into spectacular and quality football."

Lucescu stepped down as Shakhtar coach last month after 12 years in charge during which time they won 22 trophies, including eight league titles and the 2009 UEFA Cup.

The 70-year-old former Romania player and manager left after Shakhtar defeated Zorya Luhansk 2-0 to win the Ukrainian Cup on May 21, the sixth domestic cup triumph of his reign.

Three days later he was appointed manger of Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
