Albo, Gonzalez reign supreme at MVP Nationals Juniors Championship

Jewel Albo and Anthea Gonzalez were the biggest winners of 2018 MVP Nationals Juniors Championship which concluded Wednesday at the Powersmash Badminton Center in Makati City.

Albo, the top-seed in the boys division, took home with two golds while Gonzalez cemented her place on top of the girls division with three gold medals.

In the under-17 finals, Albo surprisingly dropped his first of the tournament against unranked Lyrden Laborte. But the second generation shuttler still managed to pick up a 21-15, 19-21, 21-16 win to secure his first gold of the day.

Albo's lone silver of the day was in the boys' doubles gold as he and Guillian Rodriguez succumbed to the pair of Johnyl Mialda and Nestojan Tapales, 11-21, 15-21.

The second-generation shuttler than paired of with Gonzalez in the mixed doubles finals to triumph over Viana Antonio and Zed Monterubio, 15-21, 21-14, 21-15 triumph to bag another gold.

Gonzalez, on the other hand, went 3-for-3 in her events. Aside from her mixed doubles crown with Albo, she won the under-17 singles division against Karyll Rio, 21-10, 21-15. She also won in the doubles title alongside Dana Navarro outlasting Christine Dorega and Clara Ignacio, 18-21, 21-16, 21-16, for her third gold in the U17 division.

In the other age brackets, Rey Angelo Pedron won the U15 division and Christian Dorega claimed the U13 title. The U11 division meanwhile belonged to Wijel Albo and Jr Pullon won the U9 group.

Pedron also won the boys doubles U15 crown with partner Allen Penute as they pulled the upset against Raydric Abinales and Ashton Prieto, 15-21, 21-16, 21-18. Ryan Bernal and Dorega went on to win the Boys' Doubles championship.

For the distaffs' side, Rio, who last the U17 crown to Gonzalez earlier, vented her ire on Patricia de Leon to win the U15 tiara, 11-21, 21-15, 21-10.

Rio won her second gold as she and Munir Bartolome won the U15 mixed doubles tournament.

Andrea Hernandez and Rosheila Quierez bagged gold in the U15 and U13 divisions, respectively.

Other doubles winners are Andrea Hernandez and Rheylyn Pedron (Girls Doubles U13), Althea Fuentespina and Rheylyn Pedron (Girls Doubles U15), and Joe Marie Moncada and Althea Ocampo (Mixed Doubles U13).

The awarding ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 17 at the Ayala Malls in South Park, Alabang.
