Breanna Stewart sits for UConn

UConn was without freshman forward Breanna Stewart for Saturday's NCAA tournament-opening 105-37 victory against Idaho in Storrs, Conn., due to a left calf injury.

The team called the move precautionary.

"Breanna could have played today, but we felt it would be best to use precaution and almost guarantee that she'll be ready Monday night," Huskies coach Geno Auriemma said after the game.

Stewart complained of soreness in the calf Friday, and she underwent an MRI. There was no indication of when the injury occured.

Stewart is averaging 12.7 points this season, third-most on the Huskies. She's also third on the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.

UConn (30-4), the top seed in the Bridgeport Regional, faced the No. 16 Vandals (17-16) for the first time in program history. The Huskies will meet No. 8 seed Vanderbilt in the second round Monday.
