Former Tiger Ben Griffiths signs as a punter with USC football

Former Richmond player Ben Griffiths will join USC football as a punter after signing his letter of intent on Early Signing Day for 2019.

The Trojans were in need of a quality punter after both Reid Budrovich and Chris Tilbey exhausted their NCAA eligibility this season and on Friday the Australian was confirmed as their replacement.

Griffiths, 27, spent eight seasons at the Tigers before retiring at the beginning of the 2018 season. His career in the AFL was plagued by numerous concussions which led him to question whether or not he wanted to remain in the sport.

Griffiths had been training with Prokick Australia earlier in 2018, a kicking academy run by former AFL-turned-NFL punter Nathan Chapman and former NFL kicker John Smith.

The program has produced five straight Ray Guy Award winners, including Utah's Tom Hackett and Mitch Wishnowski, before Texas A&M's Braden Mann won the award this year.

Meanwhile, former Tigers teammate Ben Lennon has been picked up by Utah.

The signings come just days after former NRL star Valentine Holmes was selected to compete for a spot in the NFL's International Player Pathway Program.
