The AFL appears set to reduce halftime breaks to 15 minutes in 2020, according to a report from the Herald Sun.

There had been widespread speculation as to whether or not the game needed speeding up, leading the AFL to investigate shorter breaks. The suggestion was put to clubs and coaches and was met with support.

It's a move which will almost certainly be backed by the broadcasters who can lose up to 20 percent of their audience during the current 20-minute interval.

The initial suggestion was for the breaks to be cut to 10 minutes, however the Herald Sun is reporting it will only be shortened by five.

The quarter-time and three-quarter-time breaks would likely remain at six minutes each.
