Power star, young Don banned for breaching bio-security rules

Port Adelaide star Ollie Wines will miss his team's Showdown against Adelaide after becoming the second AFL player to breach the league's return to play protocols on Thursday.

Late on Thursday, the AFL announced Wines had breached the living arrangements protocols that apply to all players and officials after conducting an independently-arranged media interview at his home.

"The AFL looked into the matter, in conjunction with the club, and as a result Wines has been suspended for one match for the breach of the protocols and will undergo further education," the AFL said.

The inside midfielder will miss the Showdown but will be able to participate in match simulation training on Saturday with the Crows.

Earlier on Thursday, Essendon was forced to suspend Brandon Zerk-Thatcher for Round 2 after the club was made aware he breached the AFL's return to pay protocols.

Zark-Thatcher reported himself to the club for breaching the AFL's living arrangements. He has since undergone two COVID-19 tests and returned negative results before returning to the club.

An investigation by the club and the AFL resulted in a one-match suspension.

The AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said it was important that players adhered to the protocols.

"The protocols are very clear that players and officials should only have essential visitors attend their homes. We acknowledge Ollie's remorsefulness for his mistake, but all players and match-day officials need to abide by the protocols in place at the time."
