GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Jerry Toliver extended his points lead in the NHRA's Funny Car division with his second victory of the season, Sunday in the Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
Toliver, outran Ron Capps for the victory in a battle of Chevy Camaros. Toliver, also a winner at the season-opening event in Pomona, Calif., drove his Camaro to a 5.071-second run at 296.50 mph to pull away from Capps' Camaro, which lost traction and ran 6.185 at 155.76.
Doug Kalitta, Warren Johnson, Dave Schultz and Randy Daniels also were also winners in their respective categories.
Kalitta did a masterful driving job to claim his third career Top Fuel victory. His neared the center line at the end of the run, but he managed to keep it under control and post a winning 4.614 at 313.58. Runner-up Tony Schumacher drove his dragster to a 4.679 at 314.97 in his third final in as many races.
Johnson scored his 80th career Pro Stock victory and in the process handed winless Troy Coughlin his ninth straight runner-up
finish. Johnson's Pontiac covered the quarter-mile in 6.900 at
199.35, while Coughlin's Oldsmobile had mechanical problems and
posted an 8.865 at 106.59.
Schultz got his 44th career Pro Stock Motorcycle victory, and
fourth at Gainesville Raceway by upsetting No. 1 qualifier Tony
Mullen in the final. Schultz rode his Suzuki to the victory with a
7.285 at 182.87, besting Mullen's slower 7.340 at 177.88.
Daniels earned his third career Pro Stock Truck win by
outrunning Greg Stanfield in a battle of Chevy S-10s. Daniels
recorded a 7.517 at 178.21 to take the win, while Stanfield lost
traction and ran 7.779 at 148.35.
