KENT, Wash. -- Gary Scelzi tied the NHRA record for Top Fuel
victories in a season, outrunning Doug Kalitta on Sunday to win for
the sixth time.
Scelzi covered the Seattle International Raceway quarter-mile in
4.711 seconds at 303.98 mph, edging Kalitta at the finish in the
Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals. Kalitta was clocked
in 4.789 at 291.19.
Scelzi won for the 20th time in his career. Also a six-time
winner in 1998, he shares with eight others the record for most Top
Fuel victories in a season.
John Force and Richie Stevens also were winners.
Force got his sixth Funny Car victory of the season and in the
process cut into Jerry Toliver's points lead with a win over Frank
Pedregon. The win also extended Force's record for most victories
in an NHRA career to 87.
He had a run of 4.973 at 299.60. Pedregon lost traction, and
covered the distance in 6.530 at 140.69.
Stevens got his third career win, defeating Jeg Coughlin in Pro
Stock. Stevens went 7.018 at 195.70, crossing the finish line in
front of Coughlin, who covered the course in 7.498 at 146.
