Cardinals' draft receives mixed reviews from Mel Kiper despite needs being met

TEMPE, Ariz. -- In his review of the Arizona Cardinals’ 2017 draft, ESPN’s Mel Kiper offered some glowing praise, some criticism and raised his eyebrows as to why a quarterback wasn’t drafted.

But the Cardinals’ draft was better than the ‘B’ that Kiper graded this year’s haul.

Kiper approved of Arizona’s first two picks -- linebacker Haason Reddick in the first round and defensive back Budda Baker in the second -- saying Baker may be among the best rookies next year.

“I'm going to make an early prediction and say he ends up on my Rookie Big Board next season,” Kiper wrote in his review.

Kiper thought Arizona reached in drafting wide receiver Chad Williams out of Grambling State, also raising questions about his off-field character, the result of Williams' arrest last May for possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm with drugs. The charges were dropped.

Kiper also said he had fourth-round pick Dorian Johnson as his fifth-rated guard and added that fifth-round pick T.J. Logan was his top-rated kick returner.

Kiper raised a legitimate concern over Arizona’s future at quarterback since the Cardinals passed on drafting one this year. As of now, there isn’t a clear-cut plan of succession on the Cardinals’ roster. While Kiper wrote that he would’ve liked to have seen the Cardinals find a replacement for former defensive tackle Calais Campbell, the Cards are expecting Robert Nkemdiche and Rodney Gunter to fill his role.
