Earl Watford to replace Evan Boehm at right guard

TEMPE, Ariz. -- As the Arizona Cardinals continue looking for solutions to their foundering run game, they made a change at right guard.

Earl Watford, who Arizona re-signed last week, will start in place of Evan Boehm on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coach Bruce Arians said. Watford started at left guard in last weekend’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Earl’s looked really good,” Arians said.

Offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin said Thursday that he would “feel good” with Watford on the field.

Watford said there wasn’t much of a readjustment in rejoining his original team.

“I didn’t forget anything, if that’s what you’re asking,” he said. “Little tweaks here and there. Just more technique wise and just getting back in the groove of running things like we did before.”

Watford’s promotion to the starting lineup marks the end of the Boehm experiment. A natural center, Boehm was moved to guard as a rookie last season and started there the first five games this season.

But Boehm struggled this year. He has a team-high five penalties, four of which were holding.

“He’s more of a natural center,” Arians said. “The holding penalties have got him in trouble and hurt us. When Earl came in, he knew the offense. It’s a natural fit. Picked it up even quicker than I thought he would coming back, but I still think Boehm’s going to be a hell of a center some day and his position flexibility is pretty strong for us on Sunday.”

This could be the first week since Week 1 that Arizona’s offensive line begins to find some stability.

Left tackle D.J. Humphries (knee) and left guard Alex Boone (pec) will both return to the starting lineup, not without some concerns, Arians said.

Arians will closely monitor both players’ conditioning and may substitute them out through the game, which Arians said is rare for the Cardinals to do. Humphries hasn’t played since Week 1, when he suffered a sprained MCL, and Boone hasn’t played since Week 3, when he suffered a pectoral injury.

Watford could secure a starting job for the remainder of the season with a strong showing Sunday. He’d prefer settling in at one position instead of moving across the line.

“Love to,” Watford said. “That’s probably the best thing to do, being at one spot. You can focus on that one position. It’s the best thing.”
