Rapid Reaction: Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3

BOSTON -- Make that two in a row for the Boston Red Sox.

Thanks to a strong start by Clay Buchholz and some timely hitting, the Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Saturday night at Fenway Park.

The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 12 minutes due to inclement weather, but Buchholz was not affected. He worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. He tossed 101 pitches (64 strikes) and improved to 7-8 in his 24th start of the season.

Dustin Pedroia, Will Middlebrooks, Yoenis Cespedes and Christian Vazquez all contributed an RBI to the victory.

Despite Toronto pushing across a run in the top of the first inning, Buchholz pitched out of a jam and kept the damage to a minimum.

After Boston tied the game at 1-1 in the home half of the first, Buchholz settled in nicely. He allowed a leadoff single to Kevin Pillar in the top of the second, but after that he retired 12 batters in a row.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox scored three more runs en route to a 4-1 lead through five innings. In the top of the sixth, Buchholz pitched into a bit of trouble when the first two Toronto batters -- Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion -- led off with a double and walk, respectively. Buchholz then induced Adam Lind into a 1-6-3 double play and ended the threat by getting Dioner Navarro to fly out to center.

As Buchholz's pitch count neared triple digits, he hit Danny Valencia with a pitch to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Pillar popped out to second for the first out of the inning, and Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to take the ball from Buchholz after his 101st pitch of the game.

As Buchholz watched from the dugout, Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow quickly surrendered a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Colby Rasmus, which narrowed Toronto's deficit to one run. That was the only hitter Breslow faced before Burke Badenhop entered and finished the inning with Boston clinging to a 4-3 lead.

Newly appointed Red Sox closer Edward Mujica entered the game with one out and one runner on in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs, he walked Bautista before getting Juan Francisco to ground out to first base to end the game. It was Mujica's fourth save of the season.

Bugged: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli was removed in the top of the third inning due to illness. Allen Craig, who started in right field, moved to first, and Daniel Nava was inserted into right field. Brock Holt was removed from Friday's game due to dizziness. Napoli went 1-for-1 with a run scored before he left the game.

Leading off: In only his second game this season batting in Boston's leadoff spot, Mookie Betts went 1-for-4. He registered his first big league triple in the bottom of the first inning. Betts crushed an offering from Toronto starter J.A. Happ and deposited it into deep center field. Betts also struck out twice.

Web gem: Betts produced with his glove, too. With Boston holding onto a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning, Toronto had two on with two outs when Pillar popped up to shallow center field. It was the type of ball that normally falls into no man's land, but Betts got a great jump on the ball and made a diving catch to end the inning.
