Sammy Watkins unsure if he'll play in Bills' preseason opener

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins is unsure if he'll suit up for Friday night's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers.

"I don't even know at this point if I'm playing or not," Watkins said after Wednesday evening's practice. "Hopefully I am. ... I'm pretty sure the [first team] will probably get a drive or two. I don't know the situation. But hopefully I'll be out there."

Watkins briefly pulled out of 11-on-11 drills during Wednesday's practice and met with trainers on the sideline. He returned for at least one snap later in practice but his workload appeared limited.

Watkins said after practice he was "feeling good" but added that he had been "sore" at points in training camp, echoing what the second-year receiver said last week when he sat out a portion of a practice.

Beyond Watkins, there are several other players who missed practice time Wednesday, putting their status in doubt for Friday's game:

WR Percy Harvin -- He did not practice Wednesday for what the Bills called a "maintenance day." It's possible that the Bills will take it easy with Harvin and keep him out of the opener.

RB Fred Jackson -- He's expected to miss at least another week with a hamstring injury.

G Richie Incognito -- He experienced swelling in his ankle after Monday's practice and sat out Tuesday and Wednesday; he could return next week.

DT Kyle Williams -- He left Monday's practice with a bruised quad and most likely won't play Friday; he could be back next week.

DL Alex Carrington -- He was a new absence Wednesday evening with an undisclosed injury.

DT Stefan Charles -- He left Wednesday's practice with trainers following an undisclosed injury.

RB Anthony Dixon -- He remains out with a calf injury and might not return until late in the preseason, at the earliest.

CB Ross Cockrell -- He left last Saturday's scrimmage with a knee injury, which isn't expected to be season-ending but could keep him out for the foreseeable future.

LB Jimmy Gaines -- He showed up to Monday's practice with his arm in a sling; no word on how long he'll be out.

TE Chris Manhertz -- He briefly returned to practice after an extended stay on the active/PUP list but was sidelined again by Wednesday.
