Brandon Reilly, Jordan Mudge return to Bills on practice squad

The Buffalo Bills' release of undrafted rookie wide receiver Brandon Reilly elicited a strong negative reaction Saturday from fans, partly because of Reilly's strong preseason performance -- 11 catches, 139 yards and one touchdown.

Reilly might not have earned a spot on the 53-man roster quite yet for Buffalo, but after he cleared waivers Sunday he was one of seven players cut by Buffalo to return to the practice squad.

Here are the eight members of the Bills' practice squad as of Sunday. The team can sign a maximum of 10:

  • LB Zach Vigil: He is the most experienced member of the practice squad, having played 16 games for the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted rookie in 2015, as well as seven games for Miami and two for the Washington Redskins last season. Because of Vigil's level of experience, the Bills must keep a full 53-man roster as long as Vigil is on the practice squad under NFL rules.

  • WR Brandon Reilly: The Nebraska product missed the cut for the 53-man roster, with the Bills instead opting to trade for Carolina Panthers receiver Kaelin Clay.

  • G/C Jordan Mudge: The personable 28-year old rookie has taken an unusual path to the NFL, spending time in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League before the Bills called him in April. He impressed in training camp but fell short of making the 53-man roster.

  • DT Marquavius Lewis: Once a highly-touted junior college recruit, he played the past two seasons for South Carolina. He lined up mostly as a defensive tackle this preseason for the Bills but was a defensive end in college.

  • S B.T. Sanders: He is an undrafted rookie from Nicholls State who could eventually benefit from a lack of safety depth on the Bills' 53-man roster. He played mostly on the third-team for the Bills in training camp.

  • CB Marcus Sayles: He is an undrafted free agent from West Georgia who spent most of training camp with the Bills as a third-team nickel cornerback.

  • WR Daikiel Shorts: Like Reilly, the undrafted rookie from West Virginia could eventually earn a promotion to the 53-man roster because of the Bills' thinner receiver depth chart.

  • DE Ian Seau: The nephew of late Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau, he is in his second NFL season after spending training camp last summer with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent from Nevada.
