Field Yates breaks down how rookie DeShone Kizer can top Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler as Cleveland's starting QB. (1:26)

BEREA, Ohio -- One day after railing about his team’s sloppy practice, Hue Jackson put his team through the ringer on Sunday.

Jackson had a lengthy, physical and competitive practice -- with three “siren periods” of live hitting. Two is atypical, three may have set a new standard.

Jackson handled the quarterback position the same way Sunday that he did on Saturday. Brock Osweiler got first reps with the starters. Cody Kessler followed with the backups. Then DeShone Kizer got reps with the starters.

The practice took place amid the backdrop of quarterbacks coach David Lee praising Kizer’s work effort and ability but blatantly saying he’s not ready to start.

Highlights and lowlights included:

  • Owsweiler placing a perfect pass down the sideline and down the field to Corey Coleman, who spun out of Jamar Taylor's tackle and outran Derrick Kindred to the end zone.

  • Isaiah Crowell bursting through a hole up the middle, then setting up and using a downfield block from Rashard Higgins on a 61-yard touchdown.

  • Cody Kessler throwing an interception off Jordan Payton's hands, then almost following with another turnover on the next play as Kessler's throw into traffic forced Jabrill Peppers to do push-ups on the field after he dropped the potential pick.

  • Kessler throwing a 6-yard TD to Coleman in the corner of the end zone; the ball went between the hands of Najee Murray before Coleman made the catch -- after lining up in the slot.

  • Kizer converting a fourth down with a good throw, then throwing an interception where Channing Stribling made an aggressive move to get the ball.

Based on this practice, there was little movement among the quarterbacks, as Jackson insisted the team is not thinking about a game but instead going over ways to improve while in “training camp mode.”

Jackson said he would name a starter for the second preseason game Aug. 21 against the Giants on Wednesday or Thursday.
