Browns' practice squad includes drafted WR Rashard Higgins

The Cleveland Browns have nine of the spots filled on their 10-man practice squad as of mid-day Tuesday.

For the 10th player, the Browns could try to place a quarterback on the practice squad before the weekend. That could be newly acquired Josh Woodrum or Kevin Hogan. The risk: If either is released, any other team could claim him via waivers or try to convince him to join their practice squad.

Here’s a look at the initial nine players on the Browns' practice squad:

OL Travis Averill (Boise State): Averill was a three-year college starter at guard who spent training camp in Atlanta working at center.

LB B.J. Bello (Illinois State): He spent training camp with the Browns and had five tackles in limited preseason time.

WR Rashard Higgins (Colorado State): The fifth-round pick in the 2016 draft had a disappointing three catches for 26 yards in preseason. How he reacts to being on the practice squad could determine his long-term future in Cleveland.

CB Darius Hillary (Wisconsin): The Browns are high on this young corner, and it would not be surprising if he were promoted to the active roster when the team moves to carry just three quarterbacks.

TE J.P. Holtz (Pitt): Holtz was active as a pass-catcher in practice but had just one reception in preseason games. He is the kind of player who benefits from practice squad time.

LB Deon King (Norfolk State): His speed impressed coach Hue Jackson, but the Browns feel he needs more practice time before he’s ready for the roster. He had nine tackles in preseason.

RB Terrence Magee (LSU): He had 25 carries for 75 yards for the Browns in preseason.

CB Najee Murray (Kent State): Murray showed skills in camp and may make the roster before the season ends, at least as a special-teams player.

S Kai Nacua (Brigham Young): Moving Nacua from the 53-man roster to the practice squad was a bit of a surprise because he showed he could play special teams. He was a pleasant surprise in camp.
