Cowboys waive five players; none are surprising

IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys need to make 10 more roster moves by Tuesday to reach the 75-player limit after releasing wide receiver Phil Bates, cornerback Robert Steeples, long snapper Casey Kreiter, punter Tom Hornsey and defensive tackle Carlif Taylor.

None of the moves today was especially surprising.

Hornsey was unspectacular in the preseason, averaging 45.4 yards per kick. Steeples ended last year on the practice squad and was a future signing with Kreiter last January. Bates and Taylor were added during training camp in part because of injuries.

One move that should come by Tuesday is placing Orlando Scandrick on injured reserve. He had surgery to repair torn anterior and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee last week.

The Cowboys practice today at AT&T Stadium and Tuesday at Valley Ranch before their kickoff luncheon on Wednesday. They close out the preseason on Thursday against the Houston Texans.

The final cuts come Saturday.
