Rapid Reaction: Angels 6, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers’ struggles at home versus the Los Angeles Angels carried over from last season in a 6-3 loss before 18,401 Monday night in the opener of a three-game series. The Angels overcame a three-run deficit in the first inning with a four-run fifth for their 10th win in 11 games at Globe Life Park.

Texas lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

How it happened: Rangers starter Ross Detwiler for the initial four innings showed improvement over his first outing when Oakland tagged him for 10 hits and eight runs (five earned) in 4.1 innings. The left-hander took a 3-1 lead into the fifth when his solid evening unraveled. A leadoff walk to Chris Iannetta, who entered the game with a .056 batting average, proved costly. Two batters later Collin Cowgill hammered a game-tying homer to center that traveled an estimated 412 feet. After a walk to Mike Trout, David Freese gave the Angels a 5-3 lead with a two-run homer to right. The Angels tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on Kole Calhoun's pinch-hit single. Matt Shoemaker settled down after a shaky start to earn his second victory.

Striking early: After going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in Sunday’s 14-inning loss, the Rangers cashed in with two clutch hits in the first inning to open a 3-0 lead. Prince Fielder's single followed by a Mitch Moreland double staked Texas to a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice line-out to right field scored Fielder with the third run. Leonys Martin and Adrian Beltre began the rally with table-setting singles. The Rangers could muster three hits while going scoreless in the final eight innings.

Throwing some leather: Carlos Peguero, making his first Rangers' start in left field, raced back and to his left to make a nice running catch of a line drive off Cowgill’s bat with a runner on base in the third inning. Peguero at the plate doubled and drew a walk.

Costly transfer: Rougned Odor made a slick stop of Erick Aybar's wicked one-hopper in the fourth inning to set up what should have been an inning-ending double play. But Odor dropped the ball while transferring and could only get the out at second. It turned out to cost the Rangers a run when Matt Joyce delivered an RBI double to cut the Texas lead to 3-1.

Welcome, Stolmy: Right-handed reliever Stolmy Pimentel made a good first impression in his Rangers debut, pitching out of a jam in the sixth after inheriting two base runners. He followed that up with two scoreless frames.

What’s next: The Rangers will send Nick Martinez (1-0) to the mound for Tuesday‘s start against the Angels set for 7:05 p.m. at Globe Life Park. He will be opposed by right-hander Drew Rucinski (0-0). Martinez, who worked seven scoreless innings in Oakland in his season debut, won only once in eight decisions at home last season.
