DeAndre Levy already out, Lions get thinner on defense with more injuries

DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions are getting really shorthanded at linebacker.

The team made starting linebacker DeAndre Levy inactive for Sunday’s game against Tennessee as he deals with a quad injury. Levy, who missed all week of practice, had been listed as doubtful on Friday.

With Levy out, a combination of Kyle Van Noy and rookie Antwione Williams replaced him in the lineup.

It got worse in the first half for Detroit as well. The franchise lost Williams -- Levy’s replacement -- to a thigh injury in the second quarter and he hasn’t returned. This leaves the Lions with three healthy linebackers: Tahir Whitehead, Van Noy and Thurston Armbrister. Detroit has also used Brandon Copeland as a linebacker at points Sunday.

Levy played all 70 snaps for Detroit in the season-opener. Without him in the lineup, Tennessee's tight ends Delanie Walker and Anthony Fasano could be in line for big days. Walker had four catches for 44 yards in the first half.

The lions' injury issues spread from linebacker, too. Ezekiel Ansah left after the third play of the game with an ankle injury and has not returned, forcing Detroit to use Devin Taylor, Kerry Hyder, Wallace Gilberry and Copeland in a defensive-end rotation.

And running back Ameer Abdullah went to the locker room late in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Also out for Detroit is No. 2 tight end Cole Wick. The rookie was listed as questionable with a shoulder injury. With Wick sidelined, expect the Lions to look to a combination of Khari Lee and Orson Charles to replace him in his limited snaps.

Most of the tight-end snaps last week went to Eric Ebron anyway, so it is probably more of an uptick for Lee, who appears to be the better blocker than Charles.

Also, Detroit dressed only three running backs for the second straight week: Ameer Abdullah, Theo Riddick and Dwayne Washington. Zach Zenner remains a healthy scratch.
