Yes, Hoskins hit another home run

Rhys Hoskins did it again. Hoskins hit his 17th home run, becoming the first player in major-league history to hit that many homers in his first 33 games, and drove in three runs in the Phillies’ 8-1 win over the Marlins on Wednesday. Hoskins is only the fourth player in the modern era to hit at least 17 home runs over any 33-game span in his rookie season, joining Rudy York (1937), Mark McGwire (1987) and Gary Sanchez (2016).

Almora comes to the plate twice and drives in six

Albert Almora Jr. sat on the bench for six innings, but when he entered the game played between the Mets and Cubs, he had a game for the ages. Almora Jr. drove in six runs with a three-run home run in the seventh inning and delivered a triple with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. There have been over 2000 six-RBI games produced in the major leagues since MLB began tracking that statistic officially in 1920, but there have been only two other instances of a player driving in six runs while only having two plate appearances in the game: Detroit’s Babe Birrer against Baltimore on July 19, 1955 and San Diego’s Archi Cianfrocco against Atlanta on July 21, 1995.

Clevinger dominates Tigers as Tribe sets A.L. record

Mike Clevinger allowed one earned run while pitching two outs into the sixth inning and earned the victory in the Indians’ American League record-breaking 21st consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon. Clevinger finished the season 4-0 with a 0.76 ERA against the Tigers. He is only the second pitcher to go 4-0 or better with an ERA that low against the Tigers in a single season since the American League began tracking ERA in 1913, joining Hall of Famer Walter Johnson, who was 5-0 with a 0.68 ERA against Detroit in 1913. Clevinger is the first Indians pitcher to go 4-0 or better with an ERA below 0.80 against a particular opponent in a single season in 49 years, since Luis Tiant was 4-0 with a 0.50 ERA against the Yankees in 1968.

Gardner delivers the big hit in Yankees’ win

Brett Gardner’s single with the bases-loaded in the second inning was the decisive blow in the Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Rays at Citi Field on Wednesday afternoon. Gardner has 11 hits in 21 at bats with the bases loaded over the last two seasons. His .524 batting average with the bags full since the start of the 2016 season is the second-highest among the 106 players with at least 20 at bats in that situation, behind Daniel Murphy (.545).

Four straight strong starts for Giolito

Lucas Giolito allowed one run and four hits and came away with a no decision in the White Sox’ win over the Royals on Wednesday. Giolito has allowed four or fewer hits in each of his last four starts, holding opponents to a .144 batting average over that span. He is the first White Sox rookie pitcher to allow four or fewer hits in at least four consecutive starts in 50 years, since Cisco Carlos did it in four straight starts in 1967.

Mancini is showing off his power in the first inning

Trey Mancini’s triple in the first inning drove in Adam Jones with what proved to be the winning run in the Orioles’ 2-1 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Mancini raised his slugging percentage to an even 1.000 in 29 first-inning at bats with his triple. That’s the highest first-inning slugging percentage for any of the 241 players with at least 20 at bats in the initial frame this season.

Kintzler finally buckles with the bases loaded

Matt Kemp hit a grand slam home run off Brandon Kintzler in a six-run sixth inning in the Braves’ 8-2 win over the Nationals on Wednesday. Prior to Wednesday, Kintzler had faced 41 batters with the bases loaded in his career and none of them had delivered an extra-base hit. The only active pitcher that had faced more batters with the bases loaded without allowing an extra-base hit than Kintzler was Alex Colome (42).

Kemp had 124 at bats with the bases loaded entering Wednesday’s action. He had been homer-less in his last 63 at bats with the bags full after hitting six homers in his first 61 career at bats with three men on.

Suarez continues to produce with two outs

Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam home run with two outs capping a five-run fifth inning in the Reds’ 6-0 win over the Cardinals on Wednesday. Suarez has now produced 40 of his 79 RBIs with two outs this season. That’s the highest percentage of RBIs (50.6%) that have come with two outs among the 71 players with at least 70 runs batted in this season.

A’s end eight-game road losing streak with win at Fenway

The A’s snapped their eight-game road losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Only one other team over the last 13 seasons snapped a road losing streak of eight or more games with a win at Fenway Park. The Tigers ended a 10-game road skid with a 6-5 win in Boston in 2010.

Zunino’s two homers lift Mariners

Mike Zunino smacked two solo home runs leading the Mariners to an 8-1 win over the Rangers on Wednesday. It marked the third time Zunino hit multiple homers in a game this season, the most such games in a single season by a Mariners catcher in the team’s franchise history. Two other catchers have three multiple homer games this season: Gary Sanchez and Willson Contreras.

There have been 36 multi-homer games hit by catchers this season. Those are the most such games by catchers in a single season in major-league history. The previous high was 33 multi-homer games by catchers in 1999.

Rosario delivers a walkoff homer for the Twins

Eddie Rosario’s home run in the bottom of the tenth inning gave the Twins a 3-1 win over the Padres on Wednesday night. Rosario was just 1-for-18 in extra innings in his career entering the contest. Rosario’s homer was the 46th of his career, but it was the first that gave his team the lead in the eighth inning or later.

Pollock drives in four in D’Backs win

A.J. Pollock drove in four runs leading the Diamondbacks to an 8-2 victory over the Rockies on Wednesday. Pollock entered the contest with just 32 RBIs in 407 plate appearances this season. His ratio of one RBI for every 12.7 plate appearances was the fifth worst in the National League among players with at least 400 plate appearances entering Wednesday’s action, behind Dee Gordon (RBI every 22.0 PA), Cesar Hernandez (16.9), Billy Hamilton (16.2) and Jose Peraza (13.1).

The good Darvish shows up in San Francisco

Yu Darvish hurled seven shutout innings leading the Dodgers to a 4-1 win over the Giants on Wednesday. Despite sporting a gaudy 4.34 ERA, Darvish has pitched at least seven shutout innings in four starts this season. That’s tied for the second highest total in the major leagues behind Chris Sale (7).
