Closer report: Kelley, Nationals need help

Shawn Kelley of the Nationals is helping fantasy owners in April. Will he still be helping a few months down the line? Gary A. Vasquez/USA TODAY Sports

The range of statistical possibilities for Washington Nationals right-hander Shawn Kelley this season is large. While it’s reasonable to project a scenario in which he saves 35-plus games for a first-place team, it is also, based on his history, worth questioning if he even gets to 10. Kelley is unquestionably the Washington closer today because Blake Treinen, who won the job entering Opening Day, was awful and hasn’t gotten better. Plus, promising right-hander Koda Glover, ostensibly in a ninth-inning platoon as recently as this past weekend, hit the disabled list Wednesday with a hip problem.
