Packers position preview: Changes behind QB Aaron Rodgers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Between now and the Green Bay Packers' first training camp practice on July 30, we will break down each position group.

First up is quarterback.

Returning players: Aaron Rodgers, Scott Tolzien.

Gone from last season: Matt Flynn.

New this season: Brett Hundley (fifth-round pick), Matt Blanchard (street free agent).

Position coach: Alex Van Pelt (second season as QB coach, also coaches receivers. Previously coached running backs in 2012-13).

Biggest issue: The operation of the offense will change in a big way this season, and that affects no one more than it does Rodgers. He will have a different voice in his ear with Tom Clements as the new play caller. Coach Mike McCarthy handed those duties to Clements this offseason shortly after the NFC Championship Game loss at the Seattle Seahawks in order to have more time for the defense and special teams. That doesn't mean Rodgers will take on a bigger role in the offensive play calling, but it could give him even more input into the weekly game plans.

Player to watch: When the Packers picked Hundley at No. 147 overall, it marked the first time general manager Ted Thompson had taken a quarterback higher than the seventh round since 2008 (Brian Brohm, second round). They like Hundley's combination of athleticism and arm strength, but it will be a major adjustment coming from UCLA's spread offense into McCarthy's West Coast system. During OTAs and minicamp practices, Van Pelt spent significant time working with Hundley on his footwork.

Medical report: Rodgers said it took him a couple of months to fully recover from the calf injury he sustained late last season, but said he has zero concern about it heading into this season.

Help wanted: The backup job is expected to go to Tolzien, who spent last season as the No. 3 quarterback behind Flynn. The Packers gave Tolzien a one-year, $1.35 million deal this offseason, which more than doubled his salary from last season. Tolzien has made significant improvement in his accuracy thanks to an overhaul in his throwing mechanics.

Quotable: "I think Scott's made great strides," McCarthy said this offseason. "Scott is definitely one of the quarterbacks that I've seen over the years make big changes to his throwing motion, his fundamentals. You can see his footwork is intact and now he’s been able to tie all of that to his knowledge and understanding of the offense and getting timing with the players that he's been here with in the past and creating it now with the young players. I think Scott's off to an excellent start. It's no surprise, just the amount of work that he's put in. He's definitely done a great job of taking to the coaching, the techniques and the plan to [change] his throwing motion. He's done a great job."
