GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers apparently aren’t sold on Rick Lovato as their long-snapper.

They brought in competition on Tuesday, when they signed Jesse Schmitt, who has no previous NFL game experience.

Meanwhile, veteran snapper Brett Goode remains waiting in the wings, ready to prove that he’s recovered from the torn ACL he sustained last season. Goode, who became a free agent following last season, has been working out at home in Arkansas and hopes to play again this season, agent Kevin Gold said.

Lovato, who was signed last December right out of Joyce’s Subs and Pizza in New Jersey, played in the final two regular-season games plus the two playoff games last year after Goode tore his ACL on Dec. 20 against the Raiders.

There were no major issues with Lovato's snaps in those four games but he's off to shaky start this summer.

“He’s a little bit erratic right now, but I think obviously he’s doing a good job,” Packers special-teams coordinator Ron Zook said last week. "He’s always got the experience, the job that he did, I said this a couple times, I thought he did a great job coming in here in a tough situation.

“We’ve worked a little bit on some things to change his steps and so forth. You’ve got to remember, young snappers coming out, protection was not, you know, the college snappers, they just snap the ball and run. Well, now, you get to the NFL, they’re asked to protect as well. So he’s perfecting that and getting better at it every day.”

Schmitt, a first-year player from Purdue, participated in the Packers rookie orientation camp on a tryout basis and did the same thing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.
