Packers must pay up to Jaire Alexander for picking him at 18

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Here's another thing that happens when you have a losing season: The Green Bay Packers had to fully guarantee the entire contract for their first-round pick, cornerback Jaire Alexander.

It's just the second time the Packers have had to do that since the current collective bargaining agreement, put in place for the 2011 season, established a rookie salary structure. Now, players picked from Nos. 1 to 21 in the first round receive fully guaranteed contracts. The other time they had a first-round pick with a fully guaranteed deal was in 2014, when they picked safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at No. 21. The previous year, they snuck into the playoffs with an 8-7-1 record.

Before this year, when they originally were slotted to draft at No. 14 after finishing 7-9 and then made a pair of trades that left them with the 18th overall pick, they had not picked in the top 21 since 2009 -- the draft after their last non-playoff season.

For Alexander, it means he will collect every dollar of his four-year, $12,050,734 million deal. That includes a $6,844,168 signing bonus. The Packers also hold a fifth-year option that comes with all first-round contracts under the current CBA. Clinton-Dix became the first option year the Packers exercised on a fifth-round pick under this format.

Last year, the Packers' top pick Kevin King (No. 33 overall) had his first two seasons guaranteed plus part of the third. That's the norm for the first four picks of the second round. The Packers' 2018 second-rounder Josh Jackson (No. 45 overall) had his first two years guaranteed.

The Packers signed all 11 of their draft picks in advance of this week's OTA practices. They used 93.96 percent of their rookie salary pool ($8,245,687) on those 11 picks.

Here's a breakdown of the contracts for all the Packers draft picks:
