Jacksonville Jaguars keep three QBs for second year in a row

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars cut 12 players on Friday and 17 more on Saturday in addition to various other roster moves in trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here’s a closer look at the final moves:

Most significant move: None of the moves the Jaguars made qualifies as significant. WR Rashad Greene was not having a good camp or preseason and was passed on the depth chart by undrafted rookie Keelan Cole before being impacted by a back injury. Had Greene been healthy, the Jaguars likely would have released the 2015 fifth-round pick, who played a significant role as a punt returner as a rookie. Instead they’ve put him on injured reserve. That essentially gives the Jaguars some insurance because Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee both are in the final year of their rookie contracts and it would be a surprise for the Jaguars to re-sign both.

Three QBs: The Jaguars still think highly enough of third-stringer Brandon Allen to keep him on the active roster rather than expose him to other teams and try to get him on the practice squad. Coach Doug Marrone did not include Allen in the competition to be the starter after the Jaguars’ second preseason game. However, Marrone said he chose Blake Bortles over Chad Henne in part because of Bortles’ mobility. Allen also is more mobile than Henne, so Allen could be the top option if Bortles were yanked from a game.

Bowanko traded: The Jaguars traded G/C Luke Bowanko to the Baltimore Ravens for an undisclosed draft choice. The 26-year-old Bowanko started 14 games at center as a rookie in 2014, but played in only nine games the past two seasons. He started the 2016 season on the PUP list after offseason hip surgery and wasn't added to the active roster until Week 14. He didn’t play in the next two games but played in the final two, including starting at center in the season finale for an injured Brandon Linder. Bowanko was the team’s sixth-round pick in 2014, a selection acquired from San Francisco in the Blaine Gabbert trade.
