Anthony Lynn will watch first offseason practice from office

SAN DIEGO -- As the Los Angeles Chargers begin the first day of offseason work Monday at Chargers Park, you won’t see new head coach Anthony Lynn anywhere on the field.

Per NFL rules, coaches cannot be on the field for the first phase of offseason work, which consists of two weeks limited to strength and conditioning, as well as physical rehabilitation.

Lynn said that new strength coach John Lott will be his coach on the field for the first couple of weeks.

“You want to get your hands on them, but you can’t,” Lynn said. “So you watch them out the window, just to see the guys out on the field, doing their thing with the strength coach. It will be cool.”

The Chargers finished with a league-high 21 players on injured reserve last season. So the first few weeks of offseason conditioning will be important for setting the tone for what Lynn expects from players during his tenure.

“We want to build a base for when we start doing real football stuff -- cuts and explosive movements -- we can do those things without getting hurt,” Lynn said. “I think a lot of guys today train position-specific too much. I want to go back to base training -- (running) 300s and 400s -- getting in some distance with our conditioning.”

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said one of the reasons he was attracted to Lynn during the hiring process was his connection to the training aspect of a player.

“Anthony is very in tune with the weight room, strength training and what he wants done,” Telesco said. “He has a vision for it, which is nice. You don’t always get that with football coaches.”

Here’s the Chargers full offseason schedule:

Phase 1 (April 3-17): The first two weeks of the offseason program are limited to strength and conditioning, along with physical rehabilitation. Only the training staff is allowed on the field, no coaches.

Phase 2 (April 17-May 14): During the second phase, coaches can interact with players on the field. On-field workouts include individual player instruction and drills. Team practices must be conducted on separate fields, no live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills permitted.

However, after the first week of Phase 2, the Chargers will hold their voluntary veteran minicamp from April 25-27. Phase 2 resumes the following week. Following the draft, the Chargers also will hold a rookie minicamp from May 12-14.

Phase 3 (May 15-June 15): The last four weeks include 10 days of organized team activities (OTAs) and a mandatory minicamp. During these sessions, no live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills are allowed. The Chargers' OTAs will take place May 16-18, May 23-25, June 5-6 and June 8-9.

The Chargers will finish offseason work with a mandatory minicamp from June 13-15. After camp, the team breaks until the end of July, when it will start training camp at Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa.
