Dolphins' Vance Joseph looks forward to facing 'good friend' Hue Jackson

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Cincinnati Bengals’ staff was filled with quality coaches last season during their run to the playoffs and AFC North championship. A result of their success? Two key members of the staff got earned higher jobs elsewhere.

Those two coaches will face off Sunday when Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson travels to face the Miami Dolphins and first-year defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Jackson was Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator in 2015, and Joseph was the Bengals’ defensive-backs coach.

Both will match wits Sunday in an important matchup to determine which 0-2 team will get its first victory.

“That’s my man – Hue Jackson,” Joseph said. “He’s a brilliant coach, brilliant offensive playcaller, very aggressive. He has got some tricks that we won’t know that’s coming, that we’ve got to prepare for. But good football coach and a good friend.”

The two still keep in touch, and they spoke as recently as two weeks ago, according to Joseph. But the phone has been silent this week.

It remains to be seen which coach will benefit most from the familiarity. Joseph’s knowledge of Jackson’s scheme and practicing against it constantly in Cincinnati could be an advantage, or vice versa for Jackson.

Joseph said Jackson’s strength is his unpredictability. But the Browns’ offense will be limited with a third-string quarterback in Cody Kessler and without its best receiver, Corey Coleman, injured with a broken hand.

“You’re not sure what you’re going to get each week,” Joseph said. “With a young quarterback and a young football team, they should simmer down some. In the past, he has been a multiple guy. He has run zone read. He has run speed option. He has run counter plays. He has run outside zone plays. It’s multiple with Hue. It’s a vertical pass game – always has been – so we’re expecting some vertical shots and a lot of run plays that we haven’t seen in the past.”
