Receiving game ball a top career moment for Case Keenum

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Case Keenum diligently abides by a 24-hour rule. Regardless of win or loss, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback gives himself 24 hours to think about the game, and then he moves on.

Keenum shifted his focus to preparing for Detroit on Tuesday but took time to reflect when asked about the game ball he received after he led Minnesota to a 34-17 win over Tampa Bay.

“I’ve had a game ball before but that was a special moment in the locker room,” Keenum said. “Special team moment. One of my, I would say, top football career-moments having the team there with me.”

Keenum set a new career-high 369 yards passing and threw for three touchdowns against the Bucs. It was his third straight win against Tampa Bay, something no other current quarterback has been able to accomplish when going head-to-head with Jameis Winston.

The Vikings captured the moment on video from inside Minnesota’s locker room. The postgame honor is one that Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he doesn’t bestow often, and it’s certainly one Keenum won’t forget any time soon. His teammates rallied around the quarterback in a huddle and shared in the celebration. Vikings owner Zygi Wilf was also seen getting in on the action.

“I love you boys,” Keenum told his teammates after Zimmer tossed him the ball. “I’ve never had a team like this. I am so proud of you guys. I’m going to fight for you boys every day.”

The Vikings changed the header photo on the team’s official Twitter page to the moment when Keenum received the ball. Linebacker Kentrell Brothers has his hand on Keenum’s left shoulder while the offensive line can be seen behind him clapping in celebration.

Keenum hasn’t had the time to find a special spot to display his prized game ball. For now, the veteran backup is preparing as if he will start again in Week 4 with Sam Bradford's status for Sunday’s game against the Lions in question. Bradford was given the day off from practice on Wednesday to rest.

“I’m preparing like I’m going to start and that’s my mindset,” Keenum said.
