Veteran bench player Reed Johnson has been out since late April, when he tore a tendon in his left foot. Chelsea James of the Washington Post writes that the 38-year-old outfielder appears on pace to return for the season's final month.
"Johnson got 18 at-bats after joining the Nationals late in spring training, hours after the Marlins let him go. Washington is his sixth major league team, and he figured to play a steady role on the bench, as he is a left-handed hitter and no one in the majors has more pinch hits over the last five seasons. But the Nationals also sought Johnson because he brings experience. He has not traveled with the team while injured, but is present in the locker room before nearly every home game." The Nationals could benefit from Johnson's familiarity with NL pitching. He has spent seven of his 13 seasons in the league, the last three in the NL East with the Atlanta Braves and Miami.
