MLB Rumor Central: Brewers eyeing Giants' Adalberto Mejia?

Benny Sieu/USA TODAY Sports

With the Aug. 1 trade deadline rapidly approaching, it seems likely that the Milwaukee Brewers will consider dealing relievers Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress. The San Francisco Giants are in pursuit of bullpen help and the Brewers could have a target in mind in a potential trade: pitching prospect Adalberto Mejia.

Rumor Central

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Brewers are scouting the Giants' Triple-A team and are thought to be interested in the left-hander.

The Giants rank ninth in the NL in bullpen ERA, so Jeffress (2.23 ERA) and Smith (2.00 ERA) would represent major upgrades and give manager Bruce Bochy additional flexibility for the stretch run.

Mejia, 23, has struggled a little this season in his first exposure to Triple-A. He has a 4.29 ERA in six starts at the level but has struck out just over a batter per inning. ESPN's Keith Law ranked Mejia as the No. 8 prospect in the Giants' system before the season.
