MLB Rumor Central: Phillies unlikely to call up J.P Crawford?

The Philadelphia Phillies' next wave of young players that will bring them back to the playoffs might start to make their way to the majors this fall.

Rumor Central

Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports that "there is buzz" that the Phillies will call up outfielders Nick Williams and Roman Quinn and catcher Jorge Alfaro before the end of the season, giving the trio of prospects an opportunity to compete for spots for next season. However, Salisbury believes it is unlikely that the Phils' top prospect (and No. 4 on Keith Law's midseason rankings) J.P. Crawford will get the call.

Quinn is already on the team's 40-man roster and Williams needs to be added this offseason, which helps their case to be promoted. Meanwhile, Alfaro is also on the 40-man and will likely get his first crack at being Carlos Ruiz's heir behind the plate. Crawford, on the other hand, does not need to be added to the roster this winter, so the Phillies could avoid calling him up to keep extra space.

Williams came to Philly in the Cole Hamels trade last season. He has spent the entire season in Triple-A and looks like he'll be in Philly's plans next season. Quinn has emerged this year in Double-A, hitting .297 and showing skills that could make him a long-term answer in center field. Both will likely get the call in September and join a crowded outfield picture with Peter Bourjos, Odubel Herrera and Aaron Altherr.
