NBA Rumor Central: Could Magic GM Rob Hennigan be on hot seat?

The Orlando Magic have a 7-11 record after 18 games. With the poor start, head coach Frank Vogel recently decided to bench Elfrid Payton and Nikola Vucevic and move D.J. Augustin and Bismack Biyombo into the first unit. Vogel, in his first season as Orlando's head coach, would seem to be safe; however, general manager Rob Hennigan might be in trouble if the Magic continue to struggle on the floor.

Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel writes: "Hennigan's seat as general manager couldn't be any hotter now that the season is going seriously sideways. ... If this thing doesn't turn around -- and the odds are long with a dreadful offense that has forced Vogel to already make three starting-lineup changes -- the Magic will have no choice but to fire Hennigan."

Hennigan, 34, has been in charge of Orlando's basketball operations since 2012 and through the 2012-13 to 2015-16 NBA seasons the Magic won 103 games and lost 225.

Hennigan decided to add veterans to the team in the summer, acquiring Serge Ibaka from Oklahoma City and signing free agents Jeff Green, Biyombo and Augustin, but the team continues to struggle. For that reason, some in the local media, like Schmitz, wonder if Henningan could be on thin ice.

On March 30, 2015, the Magic announced that Hennigan had signed an extension taking his deal through the 2017-18 season.

"Under the leadership of Rob, we feel that we are positioning ourselves to be able to contend in a long-term, sustainable fashion," chief executive officer Alex Martins said at that time. "We are proud of the work that Rob and our basketball operations department has done to this point and we look forward to taking the next steps in the process."
