12 finalists announced for Campbell Trophy, given to best football scholar-athlete

The 12 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy were announced today by The National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame.

The finalists, chosen from a field of 135 semifinalists, will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and get to travel to New York City for the Awards dinner on December 8. At the event, one winner will be chosen from the 12 finalists and he will have his scholarship increased to $25,000.

"We are extremely proud to announce this year's finalists for the Campbell Trophy, who make up the National Scholar-Athlete Class," NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell said in a news release. "These young men have an unrelenting commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives, and they represent all that is right in college football."

From an athletic perspective, the 12 finalists average a 3.76 GPA and 11 of the 12 are academic All-Conference players. Montana defensive end Derek Crittenden is a Rhodes Scholar nominee and seven of the finalists have already graduated or are set to graduate this December.

From a football perspective, two have played on national title teams, five have played on conference championship teams and seven are All-Conference players.

The 12 finalists are:

  • C Jake Brendel, UCLA

  • DB Taveze Calhoun, Mississippi State

  • DE Derek Crittenden, Montana

  • C Ty Darlington, Oklahoma

  • LB Jordan Dobrich, Nevada

  • OT Spencer Drango, Baylor

  • QB Blake Frohnapfel, Massachusetts

  • S Jordan Italiano, Kent State

  • LB Hank Spencer, Mount Union (Ohio)

  • QB Jason Vander Laan, Ferris State (Mich.)
