Saints sign veteran CB Chris Owens

NEW ORLEANS -- With injuries continuing to be an issue at the cornerback position, the New Orleans Saints signed veteran corner Chris Owens.

Coach Sean Payton confirmed the signing but did not announce the corresponding move.

Owens, 28, is a seven-year veteran who began his career as a third-round draft pick with the Atlanta Falcons from 2009-12. He has also been with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions, starting a total of 17 games in his career.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder has primarily worked in the slot in recent years.

The Lions placed Owens on injured reserve in August with an unspecified injury before later releasing him.

Two of the Saints' top four cornerbacks are still nursing injuries. Keenan Lewis suffered a knee injury in Week 10 that was initially diagnosed as a MCL issue. Rookie Damian Swann has been out since he suffered two concussions within a month in Weeks 5 and 8.
