Steven Matz due to be re-examined next week

NEW YORK -- New York Mets left-handed pitching prospect Steven Matz, who burst onto the scene with four RBIs in his June 28 major league debut, may be able to resume throwing next week.

Matz is due to be re-examined by team doctors after the weekend to determine if the lat strain on his left side has healed and he can pick up a baseball. Matz still would need to ramp up again before being activated from the disabled list, even if he is cleared to resume throwing next week.

He has not appeared in a game since his second major league start, when he tossed six scoreless innings at Dodger Stadium on July 5. He has a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 career innings.

“There’s nothing to indicate he’s not healing or this is slower than the doctors would normally expect,” general manager Sandy Alderson said. “I haven’t had any adverse indications, but there’s nothing where I could suggest he’s going to be back a week after he’s examined.”
