Mets reliever Bobby Parnell throws batting practice, set for activation

NEW YORK -- New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell threw a live batting practice session Sunday morning at Citi Field and expects to come off the disabled list Tuesday. That is the day Parnell is eligible to be activated as well as the day rosters expand.

Parnell essentially was forced onto the disabled list two weeks ago because of ineffectiveness in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. He had a 14.14 ERA and opponents batted .429 against him in his final 10 relief appearances before the DL stint.

The Mets gave Parnell the option of getting designated for assignment, going to the minors or being placed on the disabled list. Parnell selected the DL.

Parnell worked with pitching coach Dan Warthen while inactive to tinker with his mechanics. He is getting his arm higher now so he is not “pushing” the ball toward the plate.

“I felt like the ball’s coming out a lot better -- a lot easier, too. I didn’t feel like I was ‘muscling’ it,” Parnell said. “The rest definitely helped.”

Parnell is in his final season before free agency. He insisted he does not view September as a competition to prove he belongs.

“I can see how you could look at it that way, but I’m not going to,” Parnell said. “The goal is to get the New York Mets into the playoffs. That’s all I’m worried about.”
