LAS VEGAS 5, EL PASO 4: Starter Logan Verrett allowed four runs in four innings, but the 51s rallied to overcome a 4-0 deficit and improved to 14-5 on the season. Taylor Teagarden and Eric Campbell each had two-run homers against Jason Lane. Campbell's blast in the fifth gave Vegas the lead. Zach Lutz left the game after one inning with cramping. Jeff Walters notched his fifth save with a perfect ninth. Box PORTLAND 7, BINGHAMTON 4: The B-Mets threatened in the first, but the inning ended with a triple play coaxed by Portland starter Henry Owens. After Kyle Johnson walked and Matt Reynolds singled, Brian Burgamy sent a chopper to third. Sean Coyle stepped on the bag and fired to second. Mookie Betts’ relay to first was just in time to complete the triple play. Portland struck in the second against Tyler Pill. Blake Swihart singled, moved to second on a single, took third on a sac bunt and scored on Peter Hissey’s groundout. In the third, Travis Shaw blasted a 2-0 pitch over the right-field wall for a 2-0 lead. After retiring eight straight following Shaw’s blast, Pill stumbled in the sixth. Shaw started the frame with a single. Stefan Welch brought him home by doubling. Swihart followed with an RBI double and scored later in the inning when Henry Ramos singled against reliever T.J. Chism. Binghamton’s bats awoke a half-inning later. Johnson reached, swiped second and scored when Burgamy doubled. Two batters later, Jayce Boyd made it a 5-3 deficit with a two-run double. Portland responded immediately. Betts doubled off Chism in the seventh and Shannon Wilkerson barely cleared the left-field wall for a two-run shot, kicking the lead back to four. The B-Mets had one last gasp in the seventh. Travis Taijeron walked against reliever Noe Ramirez, took second on a groundout and scored on a double by Johnson. It proved to be Binghamton’s last baserunner. Pill (0-3) allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in his longest start of the season. Jack Leathersich posted a perfect eighth with three groundouts. It marked the second time in his career he had thrown an inning or more and not recorded a strikeout (also Apri 12, 2013 with the B-Mets). Box ST. LUCIE 5, PALM BEACH 4: Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the eighth, the Mets worked four consecutive walks to tie the score and then take the lead. Cam Maron led off the eighth with a walk issued by Aiden Lucas. After Lucas retired Eudy Pina and Phillip Evans, he walked Maikis De La Cruz. Closer Dixon Llorens entered and proceeded to walk Dilson Herrera to load the bases. Lloren then walked Brandon Nimmo to force home Maron with the tying run. Llorens followed by walking T.J. Rivera on four pitches to force home De La Cruz as St. Lucie took the lead. Randy Fontanez struck out two in a perfect ninth for his third save. Jake Kuebler tossed two scoreless relief innings and earned the win. The game went back and forth. The Cardinals opened the scoring when Alex Mejia led off the third with a triple and scored on a groundout. The Mets answered in their half when Aderlin Rodriguez ripped a two-out, two-run double. The Mets added another run in the fifth, when Nimmo drove in De La Cruz with a single. The Cardinals tied the score at 3 in the sixth when Nick Martini laced a two-run double. Then, with two outs, David Washington singled against Mets starter Luis Cessa to drive in Martini for a 4-3 Cardinals lead. Cessa allowed six hits and four runs in six innings. Cardinals starter Kyle Helisek scattered seven hits and three runs in five innings. Rivera went 3-for-4 and upped his average to .406. Nimmo was 2-for-4 and is now batting .388. Herrera’s 11-game hitting streak ended, but he reached base twice on walks. Box SAVANNAH 10, DELMARVA 5: Jeff McNeil, Jared King and Stefan Sabol homered in the opener to a road trip that also takes the Gnats to Lakewood, N.J. Savannah starter Chris Flexen earned his first win despite surrendering nine hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings. The Gnats (10-5) scored in every inning except the seventh, with every hitter reaching base at least once. McNeil went 3-for-6 with his second homer and league-leading eighth double. He now leads the Gnats with a .339 average and sits atop the South Atlantic League with 11 extra-base hits. Delmarva starter Austin Urban allowed three earned runs in three-plus innings. Gnats first baseman Dominic Smith busted out of a 2-for-30 slump with his first multi-hit game since April 9. The 2013 first-round pick went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Gnats reliever Robert Coles cruised through two scoreless innings and struck out four. He has yet to allow an earned run. Savannah reliever Dawrin Frias got into trouble in the ninth thanks to back-to-back singles, a passed ball, a wild pitch and a fielding error by shortstop Gavin Cecchini, resulting in two runs. Frias then buckled down to strike out Justin Viele. Next, Mike Yastrzemski -- grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski -- popped into a game-ending double play. McNeil caught the fly ball and was able to throw to Cecchini at third base to tag out an advancing Gregory Lorenzo. The Gnats retained first place in their division, despite ranking last in the league with seven hits per game.
