Teams have until 4 p.m. Saturday to trim their rosters to 53 players. Here's an updated look at how I see it playing out for the Philadelphia Eagles now that the preseason is in the books:
QUARTERBACK (3): Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel, Carson Wentz
Daniel did not have a great preseason despite being the most seasoned signal-caller in this system, but the Eagles probably will resist any temptation to elevate Wentz on the depth chart for now.
RUNNING BACK (4): Ryan Mathews, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Kenjon Barner
Smallwood (quad injury, concussion) ended the preseason with just two carries for 11 yards. Not ideal for a rookie they were hoping to get up to speed quickly. Barner has jumped into a likely contributor role in the meantime.
WIDE RECEIVER (4): Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Josh Huff, Dorial Green-Beckham
Paul Turner did everything he was asked to do. Caught everything that was thrown his way both in practice and in games; was far and away the team's leading receiver this preseason with 17 catches for 165 yards; even brought a punt return back for a touchdown Thursday against the New York Jets.
It's important to keep in mind that this work came mainly against reserves, though, and there's no guarantee that the Eagles think it will carry over when facing the elite of the elite, as impressive as it has been. Howie Roseman will be on the lookout for a way to upgrade the position over the next few days. That could come at the expense of Turner, who at the very least earned a spot on the practice squad.
TIGHT END (3): Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton
Head coach Doug Pederson seems to like the idea of carrying four tight ends, and the way he talked earlier this summer made you think Chris Pantale would make the team. Not sure Pantale has done enough, however, to claim a spot on the 53-man in the weeks since.
OFFENSIVE LINE (11): Jason Peters, Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks, Allen Barbre, Stefen Wisniewski, Isaac Seumalo, Matt Tobin, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Dillon Gordon, Darrell Greene
Gordon seems to have some fans inside NovaCare, and the bet here is they will keep him around to see if he develops into something special. Green, a fellow undrafted rookie out of San Diego State, also could make the cut. Johnson would not count against the roster number if suspended, but that hasn't happened yet.
DEFENSIVE LINE (10): Fletcher Cox, Vinny Curry, Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham, Bennie Logan, Beau Allen, Bryan Braman, Taylor Hart, Steven Means, Marcus Smith
Means and Smith have both done enough to earn roster spots, even if it does force the Eagles to carry six defensive ends. The fact Curry can move inside on passing downs helps make the numbers work.
LINEBACKER (6): Jordan Hicks, Mychal Kendricks, Nigel Bradham, Stephen Tulloch, Najee Goode, Mike Tavarres
I'm not sold it will be Tavarres. Maybe Quentin Gause, the rookie out of Rutgers, makes it. Or the Eagles could look to the outside for another linebacker. But it makes sense to carry six LBs, particularly when you factor in that Tulloch probably won't be a core special teams player. They need linebacker personnel who can contribute there.
SECONDARY (9): Leodis McKelvin, Nolan Carroll, Ron Brooks, Jalen Mills, Eric Rowe, Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Chris Maragos, Jaylen Watkins
Like Turner, North Dakota State rookie C.J. Smith has exceeded expectations. Perhaps he makes it, but I'll say he ends up on the practice squad.
SPECIALIST (3): K Caleb Sturgis, P Donnie Jones, LS Jon Dorenbos
Cody Parkey hasn't been the same since the groin injury. Sturgis wins the kicker competition.
