Carson Wentz on fire as Eagles training camp ramps up

PHILADELPHIA -- Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz had a near-perfect day throwing the football Saturday.

With the team in pads for the first time this summer and the intensity ratcheted up a few notches, Wentz unofficially went 25-for-25 in 7-on-7 action and 15-for-15 during full-team drills.

"It's only one practice so I'm not getting too excited," offensive coordinator Frank Reich said, "but that's probably as well as we've executed in the passing game since I've been here."

One sequence in particular spoke to how dialed-in Wentz was. He threaded one down the seam to wide receiver Jordan Matthews, who made an over-the-shoulder, fingertip grab in traffic, then ran the length of the field so he could flip the ball to a young boy wearing one of Wentz's "AO1" T-shirts. A beat later, Wentz hurled a sideline pass that at first glance looked as though it had no chance but dropped in over top of the defense and right into the arms of tight end Zach Ertz.

"It was great," Alshon Jeffery said. "I think Carson did a great job spinning it, we as receivers did a great job catching it, O-line did a great job protecting, and we had run plays, we had some pretty good runs as well."

Scares for Jeffery, Johnson

The quality offensive performance looked as though it might get overshadowed by a more significant story, as Jeffery landed on his shoulder during one-on-ones and drew the attention of trainers. He sat out some of the ensuing action but returned before long.

"I feel great," he said afterward. "I'm fine, I'm good."

Right tackle Lane Johnson came up limping after getting rolled up on during team drills but continued to practice and said he was fine. Rookie defensive tackle Elijah Qualls went down during pass-rush drills and was still hobbled in the locker room afterward.

Quarterback Nick Foles did not participate because of elbow soreness; that could help explain why he appeared off during drills Friday. Defensive back Randall Goforth (knee) was also sidelined.

Roster bubble watch

Don't be shocked if wide receiver Marcus Johnson makes a push for a roster spot. A 2016 undrafted free agent out of Texas, Johnson (6-foot-1, 204 pounds) has had a strong offseason to this point, and continued that Saturday with him making several plays.

"Marcus Johnson looked great today," Ertz said. "He's shown a lot this spring and this summer so far, so I think we're really excited about him."

Jeffery, Matthews, Torrey Smith and Nelson Agholor would arguably be the first four receivers to secure roster spots, and rookie Mack Hollins has positioned himself well as a quality special-teams player who is showing some flashes as a receiver. Perhaps Johnson convinces the front office to carry six wideouts into the start of the season.

Up next

The Eagles are holding their first of two practices at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, with a 10 a.m. ET start time. The open practice was originally slated for Saturday but was rescheduled because of the threat of bad weather.
