Pittsburgh Steelers rebuild CB depth, say goodbye to Cockrell, Golson

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers made 33 moves Saturday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here’s a closer look at the final moves:

Most significant move: Trading receiver Sammie Coates to the Cleveland Browns for a swap of late-round picks highlighted the Steelers' wideout depth and showed a team pushing for last-minute value. Coates was expendable, but still had enough talent to garner a sixth-round pick. The move provided a reminder that the Steelers have upgraded their receiver position with Martavis Bryant, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Justin Hunter. The Steelers pulled off three trades this week, adding tight end Vance McDonald and moving cornerback Ross Cockrell to the New York Giants for a conditional pick.

Cornering the market: With Ross Cockrell traded and oft-injured Senquez Golson released, the Steelers' cornerback room has five new faces (for now): Joe Haden, Coty Sensabaugh, Mike Hilton, Cam Sutton (hamstring) and Brian Allen. Coalesce that group with No. 1 Artie Burns and veteran slot corner William Gay and this is Pittsburgh's deepest group in years, though more moves might be made. The Steelers want versatile, matchup corners who can play man or zone. This group is stronger in that area.

Odd man out?: The Steelers' current roster doesn't include Le'Veon Bell, who will force an additional roster move once he's officially activated as early as Monday. Perhaps Sutton-to-injured-reserve is the logical play, or moving Allen through waivers with hopes of landing on the practice squad. Either way, the Steelers might not keep seven corners for Week 1. Also, the Steelers don't have a clear-cut kick returner and could add one on the waiver wire.

No more D.J.: Veteran tight end David Johnson had a solid training camp, but the McDonald trade and Xavier Grimble's emergence as a blocker left him on shaky ground.
