PITTSBURGH -- Most of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 10-man practice squad consists of relatively new faces, but Fitz Toussaint is quite familiar.
The Steelers running back spent much of the past two years on the 53-man roster, including a stint as a playoff starter in January 2016, posting 97 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries against the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos. Toussaint also had a costly fumble in the Denver game, but generally the Steelers value his toughness and want to keep him around.
Here's a look at the team's practice-squad roster for the start of 2017.
RB Fitzgerald Toussaint: Toussaint spent time on the Steelers' practice squad in Sept. 2015, getting promoted to the active roster in November of that year. He finished last season with 58 yards on 14 carries and started the preseason No. 1 on the depth chart.
OC Kyle Friend: The former New York Jets practice-squad player signed a reserve/futures contract with the Steelers during the offseason.
S Jacob Hagen: Hagen joins the practice squad for a second year after recording 10 tackles and an interception in the preseason finale against Carolina. He also forced a fumble and defended two passes during the preseason.
LB Matt Galambos: The former Pitt standout signed with Pittsburgh after a rookie minicamp tryout and appeared in all four preseason games with one interception.
DE Lavon Hooks: Hooks signed with Pittsburgh in back-to-back offseasons but starts his first stint on the practice squad. Hooks recorded seven tackles in the preseason.
Farrington Huguenin: Huguenin flashed potential in the preseason, recording 11 tackles and showing an active pass rush, but he found too much depth in front of him.
Jake McGee: The undrafted free agent in 2016 out of Florida was a fourth tight end for much of the preseason, catching three passes for 13 yards in preseason action.
Marcus Tucker: Tucker made a compelling case for a full-time job with eight receptions for 97 yards and consistent performances in the preseason.
Dashaun Phillips: Last month, the Steelers traded for Phillips, who started two games as a nickel corner for the Washington Redskins in 2016. Phillips recorded two tackles and a fumble recovery in the preseason finale.
Justin Thomas: The Steelers signed Thomas on Aug. 23 and hope to nurture the skill set of the quarterback-turned-receiver out of Georgia Tech.
