49ers go heavy at cornerback, inside linebacker and offensive line

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers trimmed their roster to 53 along with the rest of the league on Saturday and then didn't add anyone from waivers on Sunday.

That doesn't necessarily mean they are done tweaking the roster but for now, here's a look at the current 53-man roster as the 49ers prepare for the Sept. 12 opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

INJURY/SUSPENSION LIST

Reserve/suspended: OLB Aaron Lynch (four games).

Injured reserve: WR Bruce Ellington (hamstring), QB Thad Lewis (knee), WR Eric Rogers (knee), WR DeAndre Smelter (hamstring).

Reserve/non-football injury: DL Ian Williams (ankle).

OFFENSE

Quarterback (3): Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, Christian Ponder.

The 49ers went with three quarterbacks, choosing to let rookie Jeff Driskel go. The Cincinnati Bengals claimed Driskel off waivers on Sunday but the 49ers opted for Ponder after he played well on short notice in the preseason. All three of these quarterbacks were taken in the first 36 picks of the 2011 NFL draft.

Running back (3): Carlos Hyde, Shaun Draughn, Mike Davis.

After cutting DuJuan Harris and rookie Kelvin Taylor, the 49ers opted to go light here to allow for more depth at other positions. Taylor was brought back to the practice squad.

Wide receiver (5): Torrey Smith, Quinton Patton, Jeremy Kerley, Rod Streater, Aaron Burbridge.

Kerley and Streater have been acquired via trade in the past week-plus and offer prime examples of how much work this group still needs. Instead of wishing and hoping for young wideouts to contribute up and down the depth chart, the 49ers at least tried to bring in some experience.

Tight end (4): Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, Blake Bell, Bruce Miller.

This quartet was pretty well set for most of camp though Je'Ron Hamm made a push for a spot. Hamm also landed on the practice squad.

Offensive line (9): Joe Staley, Zane Beadles, Daniel Kilgore, Anthony Davis, Trent Brown, Joshua Garnett, Andrew Tiller, Marcus Martin, John Theus.

Not many surprises here with the choice between Theus and Fahn Cooper looking like one of the more difficult decisions. There's solid depth and versatility here, something the 49ers lacked a year ago on both counts.

DEFENSE

Defensive line (7): Quinton Dial, Glenn Dorsey, DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Tony Jerod-Eddie, Mike Purcell, Ronald Blair.

Releasing Garrison Smith had to be a tough call and it was probably made worse by seeing the Seattle Seahawks claim him on Sunday. Dorsey's recovery from knee surgery is still on-going and if the 49ers could have placed him on the physically unable to perform list, perhaps they could have kept Smith for a bit longer. There's some intriguing young talent all over this group though injuries are an issue with Dial, Dorsey, Buckner and Armstead all dealing with ailments of varying degrees during the preseason.

Outside linebacker (3): Ahmad Brooks, Eli Harold, Tank Carradine.

With Lynch suspended, the 49ers went light here, leaving preseason MVP Marcus Rush off the roster. Rush was re-signed to the practice squad and the 49ers will likely go with this group plus Blair on the edge until Lynch returns.

Inside linebacker (5): NaVorro Bowman, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Gerald Hodges, Nick Bellore, Michael Wilhoite.

Special teams needs meant the 49ers kept Bellore and Wilhoite though it's still unclear who will start next to Bowman. Hodges and Armstrong appear to be the top candidates though Wilhoite offers more of a veteran presence. It's possible the 49ers will rotate depending on the down, distance and game situation.

Cornerback (7): Tramaine Brock, Jimmie Ward, Chris Davis, Keith Reaser, Dontae Johnson, Rashard Robinson, Will Redmond.

Usually, a team keeping six corners is a lot but the 49ers had a lot of talent here and even acquired a draft pick after trading Kenneth Acker earlier in camp. Johnson and Ward offer versatility to play safety and it will be interesting to see how San Francisco aligns in the nickel. They used Davis as the inside corner during much of the preseason but it wouldn't be a surprise if at some point they bumped Ward inside with Robinson stepping into his spot on the outside.

Safety (4): Eric Reid, Antoine Bethea, Jaquiski Tartt, Marcus Cromartie.

The first three will play and play a lot and it's safe to assume defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil will find a way to get Tartt on the field with Bethea and Reid. Cromartie can play corner, too, and will be key contributor on special teams.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Specialists (3): K Phil Dawson, P Bradley Pinion, LS Kyle Nelson.

There was never any doubt here as the 49ers believe they have as solid a trio as any in the league.
