SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers announced eight members of their 10-player practice squad on Sunday after the team trimmed its roster to 53 players by Saturday's deadline. In addition, the NFL Network reported that running back Jeremy McNichols also signed to the practice squad, leaving one more spot available.

Here's a look at who made the practice squad so far:

WR DeAndre Carter -- Carter had a knack for acrobatic catches in training camp and has some return ability. He's on the smaller side so he's a bit repetitive with Trent Taylor and Victor Bolden Jr., both of whom made the roster, but he would be a logical replacement for either if needed.

OL JP Flynn -- Flynn was closer than many realize to winning a spot on the roster but ultimately lost out to fellow undrafted rookie Erik Magnuson. Regardless, Flynn is a big body who can play inside and will now get the chance to stick around as the 49ers sort through their options on the interior.

TE Cole Hikutini -- Hikutini was one of the team's most prized undrafted free agents but wasn't able to consistently produce in the preseason. Still, his upside was obvious and he's worth keeping around for a longer look.

CB Asa Jackson -- Jackson nearly won a roster spot after his two interceptions in the preseason finale but his struggles in previous games were too much to overcome. Still, Jackson has experience and versatility (he can play outside and in the slot), and would have a great chance at a promotion should any of the corners on the roster suffer injuries or falter.

RB Jeremy McNichols -- In part because of his relationship with rapper Snoop Dogg (he played for him in youth football), McNichols had been a consistent presence on this year's "Hard Knocks" but struggled to gain traction in Tampa Bay and was released. Upon arrival in San Francisco, McNichols isn't far away from a promotion as the Niners currently have just three backs on the roster. McNichols brings an impressive college resume with him after posting 1,709 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns and 37 receptions for 474 yards and four more scores.

QB Nick Mullens -- With the Niners electing to keep just two quarterbacks on the active roster, Mullens gets to stick around on the practice squad. Mullens played in only one preseason game but didn't look overwhelmed by the opportunity. It's unlikely he'd get the call before a veteran in the event of injury to Brian Hoyer or C.J. Beathard, but he'll at least get the chance to continue learning coach Kyle Shanahan's system.

DT Noble Nwachukwu -- Nwachukwu was a steady performer at the team's "big" defensive end spot, working mostly with the third team. The 49ers have a lot of options on the defensive line but will keep working with Nwachukwu.

WR DeAndre Smelter -- Smelter continues to hang on as one of the few holdovers from the previous regime. At 6-foot-2, Smelter has a size element that will at least give the Niners a different look on the scout team and he can also help on special teams.

OT Darrell Williams Jr. -- Williams was quietly one of the Niners' most intriguing young players during camp and could have a future on the active roster if he can continue to develop.
