In Eric Weems, Titans get a two-for-one special-teamer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In Eric Weems, the Tennessee Titans feel like they’ve landed a two-for-one combo.

He’ll be their return man, but he’ll also chase kick and punt returners.

Weems led the 2016 NFC champion Atlanta Falcons in punt returns (24 returns, 11.4-yard average), kick returns (17 returns, 23-yard average) and special-teams tackles (15).

That’s a rare trifecta.

“I think it starts with the attitude, you’ve got to have the attitude,” Weems said Monday during his introduction to the Nashville media. “You find that most return men are not going to cover. It’s just the way I was brought up, never back down from anything.

“Whatever coach needs you to be or needs you to do, you have to do it.”

The two-for-one combination is going to be a boon for someone else on the roster.

“We still think he can be an impact returner in this league and for this football team,” general manager Jon Robinson said on The Midday 180. “The fact that you don’t have a roster placeholder for a returner only -- because Eric can factor in on punt run, I think he was a personal protector last year, he was a 4 or 5 on kickoff cover [playing near the middle of the field] -- so the fact he can add that component to your team, it allows you to maybe carry another offense- or defense-only player because you will be able to factor Weems in there at the other spot."

The Titans did enormous early work on special teams.

Four days into free agency they’ve retained their leading special-teams tackler, Nate Palmer, and re-signed a guy who was tied for third on the 2016 Titans, Phillip Supernaw (eight). And they’ve added Oakland special-teams aces Brynden Trawick and Daren Bates as well as Weems.

“The kicking game really controls the field position of where those offenses and defenses are going to line up,” Robinson said. “When we went about targeting these guys for our special-teams unit, you look at how are they going to factor in from a strategic standpoint of where the opponents offense is going to line up and where our offense is going to line up.

“So if we can get the ball back to the offense and plus gain an extra 15 yards in field position each week that puts us in a better position to score points. There’s strategy involved when it goes to the team-building component with special teams.”
