More teams bite the postseason dust, more offseason to-do lists emerge

How will Red Sox exec Dave Dombrowski and Rangers exec Jon Daniels retool for 2017? We lay out their offseason objectives. AP Photo

Since our last update, a few teams have seen their seasons come to an end. Here are the offseason objectives for those teams, in most cases told to me directly by a member of that team's front office.

Boston Red Sox

Offseason objectives:
1. Replace David Ortiz
2. Acquire starting pitcher
3. Improve bullpen depth

The retiring Ortiz leaves behind a massive hole in the Red Sox lineup, and while there are good alternatives in free agents-to-be Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista and likely free agent Yoenis Cespedes, all three will be extremely expensive and would make the lineup too right handed heavy. If the Red Sox did decide to spend big, Encarnacion would be the best solution; he has expressed interest in playing for Boston someday and has the full public endorsement of Ortiz.

Or the Sox could decide not to replace Big Papi and instead hope Pablo Sandoval becomes a Comeback Player of the Year candidate and lives up to his ridiculously inflated contract. Obviously that's risky, though the thinking there could be that their young core of stars will perform at a higher level and the sum of their improvement could replace Ortiz's offense.
